What might our counselling sessions be like?

  • Usually, a counselling session will last for 50 minutes, once a week, at the same time.

  • You may be ready to explore in depth the reason you feel as you do. Perhaps there are past experiences that are influencing you and which you want to understand and try to resolve. This would be long-term work.

  • You may not be ready to look at the past, but want to look at a single issue and set goals for change. This will probably be short-term work, maybe six to twelve weeks.

In addition to talking together, other activities may be helpful.

    For example:

Relaxation training - to deal with stress

Role play - to help with decision making

Mindfulness meditation - useful in everyday situations where daily living is a struggle.

Guided visualisation - when you want to find direction in life.

Sometimes you may not know very clearly what type of help you need. An initial session can help you clarify your thoughts and make decisions.

    Areas of Specialism

    Chronic Pain Counselling
If you live with chronic pain you will know that it affects all aspects of your life. Talking to someone about your thoughts and feelings, who is outside the circle of family and friends, could make a difference. Tackling some of the emotional issues that come up might make you less anxious and less easily upset.

    Counselling in Retirement
Retirement may be giving you everything you hoped for, or there may be a sense of emptiness, or of expectations unfulfilled. It can be useful to talk through what your life means for you at the moment, and explore this in depth.
